Shirley Ann Hall was born June 17, 1932 on a farm near Clarks, Nebraska, to Archie and Anna (Dittmer) Merritt, the youngest of four children and died, Saturday, December 26, 2009 at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont at the age of 77 years 6 months and 9 days. As a young girl she attended Clarks Public School and in 1974 was very proud to have earned her GED. She worked as a waitress in Central City and later was united in marriage to Donald Brewer in Omaha, Nebraska. Two sons, James and Thomas and a daughter, Maxine were born to this union.
Shirley moved to the Geneva area in 1955 where she worked for a furrier. She then moved to Fairmont in 1959 where she worked as a farmhand. She was blessed with a second marriage to Ernest Hall on March 25, 1969 in Grand Island and to this union one son, Dan was born. In later years she worked at Blue Valley Community Action and at the Fairview Manor as Assistant Activities Director. Shirley served as the Fairmont correspondent for the Nebraska Signal Newspaper in Geneva.
She was a member of the Friend United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, serving her church as delegate to the Annual Conference. Shirley also was a member of the Fairmont American Legion Auxiliary and served on the Blue Valley Board of Directors.
In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing for her family, creating latch hook rugs and wall hangers, raising a garden and reading all magazines and books. Shirley was a very good cook and shared the bounty of her garden with others. Over the years she had many pets and loved caring for her them as well as her farm animals.
Shirley is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, James Brewer, Ainsworth, Thomas and Pam Brewer, Lincoln, Dan Hall, and fiancé, Elsie Kissick, York, daughter, Maxine Fawcett-Yeske and husband, Bob Yeske, Woodland Park, CO, five grandchildren, James Brewer Jr and his wife Roberta, Florida, Jennifer Brewer, Council Bluffs IA, Judson Brewer, Mississippi, Kyle Brewer, Lincoln, Kallie Brewer, Lincoln, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by parents, husband Ernest Hall, sister, Florence, brothers, Hugo, Harold and Max Merritt.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 31, 2009 at United Methodist Church, Friend with Rev. Betsy Galloway - Carew officiating. Interment at Clarks Cemetery, Clarks. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-6pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Memorials may be directed in care of the family. Condolences may be sent to the family at laubermoore.com
