Maggie Alvina Zieg was born on a farm northeast of Cordova, Nebraska on January 8, 1921, to Jacob and Margaret (Reiter) Zieg, the youngest of four daughters and died Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Heritage Crossing Nursing Home in Geneva at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 16 days.

As a young girl, she was baptized in the German Congregational Church of Friend and with the rest of her family joined the Friend Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in 1927. She attended rural School District #20 in Seward County and attended Cordova High School for one year; then transferred to Friend High School so she could take Normal Training and graduated with the Class of 1938. "Alvina", as she was affectionately known, began teaching career in elementary schools after her high school graduation. She furthered her own education by taking classes at the University of Nebraska Teachers College, graduating and completing her Bachelor's Degree in 1959. Her life was spent teaching school for 45 years - the last 25 in the Lincoln Public Schools System.

Alvina was a member of the United Church of Christ where she has served as a Trustee and Deaconess, Women's Fellowship and the Golden Agers, all of Friend. She also was a member of the State Retired Teachers Association, the York County Retired Teachers, and was a former member of the Lincoln Retired Teachers Association and the Saline County Retired Teachers Association. Alvina also enjoyed quilting at the church.

She is survived by her niece, Donna Asher and her husband Jim, Eagle River, Alaska, nephews, Roger Weber and special friend, Irene Merkley, both of Aurora, CO, Allan Weber and his wife, Sharon, Maryville, TN, great-niece, Dawn Appleby and her husband Mike, Monument, CO, great-nephew, Bryan Asher, his wife Tammy and their children, Kristen and Brandon, all of Tooele, UT, and a host of relatives and friends. Alvina was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Alma Zieg, Edna Weber and Emma Thompson, brothers-in-law, Murval Thompson and Wesley Weber.

A Prayer Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend with Rev. Tim and Ginny Adams officiating, followed by burial at Andrew Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 am Tuesday until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family in care of the funeral home.

A Memorial Service honoring her life will be held in the spring of 2010 with details to be announced later. Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend, is entrusted with the care and arrangements.
